Translation Review — A Thousand Brains (2022)
Korean translation review for Jeff Hawkins’ “A Thousand Brains: A New Theory of Intelligence”.
Year: 2022. Role: Translation review (Korean edition). Book: A Thousand Brains: A New Theory of Intelligence by Jeff Hawkins (2021).
About
I served as a domain reviewer for the Korean translation of Jeff Hawkins’ A Thousand Brains, which proposes that intelligence emerges from thousands of cortical columns each building reference frames of the world. The book is targeted at general readers but draws on cortical neuroscience and predictive coding — a domain where Korean scientific translation often introduces drift if reviewers aren’t careful.
My role: cross-check terminology (cortical columns, voting, reference frames) for fidelity to the original meaning while preserving readability.
Notes
A useful reminder that the same concept in English and Korean may trigger very different default associations — “reference frame” in English implies coordinate-system precision; the most natural Korean rendering can read more like “framework”. Translation reviews force exactly this kind of conceptual disambiguation.
